THE FEATURE

Using AI To Combat Infectious Diseases

As the world grapples with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never been more evident how important it is to find and fight infectious diseases. Is AI the technology that's changing the game when it comes to disease surveillance, drug development, and diagnostic accuracy? With its ability to analyze vast amounts of data, AI may just be the key to detecting and combating infectious diseases more effectively than ever before.

AI opens the door to new and underexplored data sources and improves the traditional set of tools for analyzing text, images, videos, and other structured and unstructured types of information. It also provides modeling frameworks to simulate complex setups and scenarios of infectious disease transmission and public health responses, which were impossible before. These AI-driven systems facilitate early detection to give public health officials a head start in deploying resources, educating the public, and implementing preventive measures.

Where We Are Today

Reducing the burden of death due to infection is an urgent global public health priority. Bacterial infections are responsible for 7.7 million deaths, which is 13.6% (or 1 in 8) of all global deaths. Making bacterial infections the second-leading cause of death globally.

More than 1.27 million people died in 2019 from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria —more than the annual death toll from malaria or Aids, highlighting the need to deploy emerging technology to address the growing impact of infectious diseases.

Identifying And Monitoring Infectious Diseases With AI

AI has emerged as a crucial tool in the fight against infectious diseases, aiding in the detection and early warning of outbreaks, trend prediction, modeling, and assessing public health responses. By analyzing diverse data sources, AI-driven tools can identify outbreaks in their nascent stages, forecast transmission patterns, and pinpoint potential targets for drug and vaccine development. These tools can enhance disease surveillance and outbreak response by facilitating faster and more accurate detection, improved treatment modalities, and preventive measures.

  • BlueDot uses AI algorithms to detect potential disease outbreaks and provide early warnings to healthcare providers and public health officials.

  • PathAI, a Boston-based startup, is using AI to improve the accuracy and efficiency of pathology diagnoses. Their platform uses AI technology and deep learning algorithms to analyze tissue samples and identify potential signs of diseases.

  • Karius, is a California-based company that uses AI to diagnose infectious diseases through a simple blood test. The Karius test identifies more than 1,000 clinically relevant pathogens from a single blood draw using novel genomics and uses advanced AI algorithms for the analysis of complex genomic data in real-time.

The Role Of AI Chatbots In Combating Infectious Diseases

AI Chatbots have the potential to be a valuable tool in providing information, answering queries, screening individuals, and monitoring infectious disease outbreaks.

Buoy Health has developed a chatbot to help individuals identify and manage the symptoms of infectious diseases such as COVID-19, the flu, and strep throat. The bot asks questions to understand the patient's current health concerns, allowing AI to identify potential causes of symptoms, and guide users. Buoy Dashboard will enable patients to research their insurance plans’ benefits to ensure access to in-network providers.

Care Angel is another company changing the game when it comes to patient care by using an AI-driven CareChat. Care Angel can close care gaps for patients with chronic conditions like never before, using augmented intelligence to reach a whopping 600% more people than traditional care management solutions.

The Future Of AI In Healthcare

As we look to the future of healthcare, it's clear that AI will play an increasingly important role in managing infectious diseases. By harnessing the power of data, predictive analytics, and machine learning, AI can transform how we approach disease detection. From improving the accuracy of diagnoses to streamlining claims management and facilitating communication between stakeholders, the benefits of AI are truly limitless.
