THE FEATURE

How AI and Machine Learning can boost Health Equity

As healthcare continues to evolve, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are becoming increasingly important in addressing persistent health equity issues. AI and data-driven technologies can be leveraged to uncover hidden patterns in data and close the health equity gap by improving access and developing targeted care programs for all population segments.

🤖 Closing the Health Equity Gap with AI and Machine Learning

A key aspect of health equity is the social determinants of health (SDOH), which include access to transportation, affordability of healthcare, and access to healthy food. According to Harvard’s School of Public Health, AI could improve health outcomes by up to 40% and reduce treatment costs by half, improving diagnosis, increasing access to care and enabling precision medicine.

Well-designed AI has the potential to fill the widening gap in access to quality care, particularly for prevalent population-health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other chronic illnesses. Researchers use NLP (natural language processing) to search medical documents for patient information.

🧐 Case Studies

Realyze Intelligence: A technology solutions company, uses AI and machine learning to generate granular insights by combining unstructured language data and standardized data (in EMRs). Detailed clinical findings (such as social determinants of health) were used to treat patients with chronic kidney disease. The clinicians could prioritize their care for patients based on disease progression. So, instead of 150,000 chronic kidney disease patients, there were 5000 that were highly likely to progress the dialysis in the next three to six months based on all of these clinical findings.

Prognos: uses AI to model a more accurate risk level and identify which members need the most care and will drive the highest cost. Insurers can then expend their resources toward these beneficiaries. Prognos also uses a lab registry of 18 billion clinical records to stratify risk for a group of beneficiaries and has access to identified data going back two years.

👨‍⚕️ Precision Medicine and Preventive Care with AI

Additionally, predictive modelling in precision medicine and preventive care is being used to nurture a healthier population. Data from diagnostic images, lab results and EMRs are being collected and analyzed to look for early signs of disease. Informing individuals about their risk of developing certain illnesses based on AI algorithms has been shown to significantly increase the uptake of preventive measures like vaccination or screening-ultimately leading to optimized outcomes.

🔮 The future of AI-driven Health Equity

As we move towards a more innovative healthcare system driven by disruptive technologies and consumerism, the healthcare ecosystem must come together to improve health equity significantly. We can overcome gaps in knowledge, augment clinical decision-making and promote health equity by training AI models on more diverse data sets and images.

Relying on tools built on narrow data can exacerbate worse outcomes for marginalized communities. To overcome this bias, healthcare professionals must assess the accuracy of machine learning models based on narrow and limited populations. For example, in dermatology, experts should make sure that the imagery training the models includes a robust collection of images on light, dark, and mid-tone skin types.

In conclusion, clinicians should not completely rely on AI as being a hundred percent accurate. It should be taken as a means to augment their intelligence and not replace it. There is a need to teach and train medical students how to harness the strengths of AI but also recognize its weaknesses. Human intervention will always be the ultimate deciding factor.
