Accelerate your clinical research while ensuring patient privacy using Gretel’s advanced multimodal synthetic data solutions.

Our technology generates artificial datasets that closely resemble real Electronic Health Records (EHRs), yet contain no actual protected health information (PHI).

Create customized data on demand to augment limited supplies, address class imbalances in historical records, and even simulate new scenarios that can unlock insights.

Ideal for hospitals and healthcare providers, Gretel’s synthetic data helps in meeting HIPAA and GDPR compliance, training sophisticated diagnostic models, and driving medical innovations that improve patient outcomes. Start exploring these possibilities for free.

THE FEATURE

5 dental AI tools we're watching

Let us ask you this: What area of healthcare do you think is most ripe for AI disruption?

We’d bet you might not think of dentistry and oral care.

But if you saw the number of AI-focused dental research studies increasing each year, you’d probably change your mind.

If you think about it, it makes sense. This field has a large visual emphasis when it comes to diagnostics. Medical AI loves imaging.

Plus, in the U.S., oral care is an area of healthcare still dominated by private practices and chains of dental offices. There’s more heterogeneity in the market and a much greater need for trust-building and one-on-one relationship management.

Today, we’re giving you the lowdown not just on why oral care is such an exciting area for healthcare AI development, but also 5 tools we’re especially stoked to watch develop.

1. Enhanced X-ray Diagnostics

Old-school X-ray imagining gets a much-needed upgrade with these tools.

Whether it’s cavity detection or bone loss measurement, FDA-cleared AI models help make all those great shots of the inside of your mouth much more useful.

Players in this space:

Why we’re excited: These tools aren’t trying to replace the existing (and essential) dentist-patient relationship. They reinforce it.

By powering their preventive care capacity, these tools help dentists build trust. They make dental providers more exacting in their work, ensuring they miss less disease.

You can even see this in their marketing. Pearl refers to itself as the “second opinion” alternative for patient skepticism.

2. Dental Practice Management

Think of all the AI-enabled practice management suites out there. We bet you can name at least half a dozen.

But how many do you know that are specific to dental practices?

One of our favorite dental practice intelligence platforms comes from Pearl. It offers a one-stop shop for everything practices and back-office staff need—from AI-enabled patient recall to referrals. Plus, Pearl’s Second Opinion imaging AI is built right in.

Why we’re excited: Products in this space recognize how special the field of dentistry is.

As a market still dominated by small practices rather than large clinics and corporations, the focus for SaaS solutions must be on small and even solo operations. Unlike with many traditional EMR vendors, the needs of small practices don’t get left in the dust in favor of winning big business. That’s a win for providers if we’ve ever seen one.

3. Dental Claim Intelligence

Since we’re talking about workflows and operations in dentistry, we’d be remiss not to mention the particularities of payers in this space.

Overjet is a strong player in this arena. Their AI-powered claims review platform is bolstered by workflow automation and access to dental consultants for manual review.

Why we’re excited: As with dental practice management solutions, AI-powered claims management providers recognize the need for smoothness and relationship management in the dental space.

4. Oral Cancer Detection

One of the biggest diseases dental providers look out for is oral cancer.

And if you’ve been following developments in healthcare AI, you know cancer detection is a classic application of imaging-focused algorithms.

In dentistry, researchers are using deep learning or neural network approaches to classify the kind of oral lesions that pose an oral cancer risk.

Want to dig in? Here are two studies on early oral cancer detection we think deserve highlighting:

Why we’re excited: While there are no approved oral cancer detection models out there (yet), properly annotated data is bringing us ever closer. Eventually, we expect dentists will rely on these tools for earlier detection and treatment of this underestimated killer.

5. Orthodontic procedure planning

If you’ve ever had an orthodontic procedure (yes, childhood braces count), you know the following is true. Orthodontists do a lot of planning and forecasting when it comes to their procedures.

Researchers in the orthodontics space are already publishing papers discussing how AI is set to revolutionize this area of oral health.

As with dental imaging analysis, orthodontic clinical decision support will likely act as a second opinion. They will bolster orthodontists’ treatment plans and offer patients assurance for their likely outcomes.

Why we’re excited: This area of oral health holds a lot of opportunity for disruption with medical AI. This is especially true when it comes to predictive

diagnostics, like analyzing the size of unerupted teeth or planning the start and endpoints of teeth to move

Final thoughts from HCAIN

One notable area of caution around these technologies is that of overtreatment

Whenever there’s potential early detection of disease, there’s always the risk of overzealous intervention. When it comes to dental care, unnecessary procedures mean additional risk of infection, out-of-pocket expenses, and extra pain and stress.

This is another reason why careful regulation of these tools—and healthcare AI across the spectrum—is something we both need and celebrate.

With that said, we hope you’re excited about the prospect of these technologies improving your experiences in the dentist’s chair.

Which of these tools do you think will be most impactful? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
